Reading Roman Numerals
Add the Roman Numerals to find the number values.
    I  =  1
    II  =  2
    III  =  3
    V  =  5
    VI  =  6
    VII  =  7
    VIII  =  8
    X  =  10
    XI  =  11
    XII  =  12
What happened to 4 and 9?
Roman Numerals are usually lined up from the greatest value
to the least value. The exceptions are the values of 4, 9, 40, 90,
400, or 900.
    IV  =  4
    IX  =  9
    XL  =  40
    XC  =  90
    CD  =  400
    CM  =  900
Whenever a smaller Roman Numeral is placed before a Roman
Numeral that is the next value greater, then the smaller value is
subtracted from the larger value.
    XXIV  =  24
